By purchasing the ready made wheel sets and
machined cylinder blocks a locomotive could be
constructed in the average model engineer’s
workshop with a small lathe and milling machine.

We can supply our own section of flat bottom aluminium
rail which has been proved in commercial service for
many years. Suitable for 7¼", 10¼" and dual gauge.
Treated sleepers, stainless steel rail fixings and
galvanized steel fishplates are all available. Track
can be supplied as parts or built up into panels.
Two and three way points and diamond crossings have
all been made and used. Interlocked point and signal
operation is available for that real railway feel.

The concept of miniature narrow gauge (or minimum gauge) on 7¼" track was first conceived by Roger Marsh with his 1968 “TINKERBELL” design but was really exploited by Jim Haylock, first with a line at Tucktonia (1980) and later at the extensive Moors Valley Railway (1986).

Jim has since been joined by nephew Tim Woron (2003) in the railway workshop and they are now able to offer a wide range of products and services to anyone wanting to build a minimum gauge locomotive, rolling stock or a complete railway. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, a full building service is available. The railway builds solid dependable engines, rather than delicate scale models and makes extensive use of modern industrial parts and techniques including bearings & fittings, laser & water jet cutting and CNC machining.

Engine building service
The original Tinkerbell design has been modified gradually over the years as experience in the locomotives on a commercial railway has been gained. The railway has 3 standard designs of steam locomotive in 7¼" gauge: Tinkerbell 0-4-2 Tank engine, Horton 2-4-0 Tender engine and the biggest engine Hartfield 2-4-4 Tank engine. Castings, certified boilers and laser or water cut parts are readily available for these engines. If you prefer something a little different, a design can be prepared to your specification.

If any of the larger jobs are too big for your workshop, a full machining service is available to allow you to build that big engine. Some later engines bear very little resemblance to the original but are faithful to the ride-in, and not ride-on, concept. This is the smallest gauge that you can ride in the cab of a full sized minimum gauge locomotive and experience the thrill of driving and firing a proper engine. Our designs are for small full sized engines and are not models. This makes for a powerful, robust, reliable engine and comfortable rolling stock.

Standard design:- Tinkerbell
This is a modern version of Roger Marsh’s 1968 design incorporating
sealed bearings and a locomotive boiler. The locomotive has been
lengthened to provide a more comfortable driving position. The locomotive
will negotiate sharp curves of 15ft radius. Many examples of this design have been built testifying to the excellent design. The design also lends itself to modification by the builder and very few of the class built so far
are identical. This is an ideal garden/hobby loco and would be suitable
to take out visiting to other railways. It can also be used for light
commercial use.

Standard design:- Horton
This is a development of the Tinkerbell design, using the same size
cylinders but with a longer boiler and the added comfort and space of a tender. The locomotive will comfortably travel round 20ft radius curves.
3½" cylinders could also be used, making this a tendered version of the standard Hartfield design. A Horton style engine is a super garden/medium
commercial usage locomotive.

Standard design:- Hartfield
This engine was designed for more heavy commercial use than Tinkerbell and is ideal and capable of running day-in, day-out on a railway like
Moors Valley Railway. It incorporates 3½" cylinders for more power than Tinkerbell and Horton. The design encompasses a higher capacity boiler than Tinkerbell for more prolonged use, and is a much larger tank engine, offering a spacious cab for the larger driver. It will competently negotiate
30ft radius curves.
